Applied Radiology

A trusted radiology journal had the authority. It needed a look that matched. We modernized the identity to meet readers where they are, in print and on screen.

Applied Radiology is a physician-authored clinical review journal for medical imaging professionals, reaching more than 50,000 radiologists worldwide. After decades as a trusted authority in the field, the publication's visual identity hadn't kept pace with how its readers were consuming content. More of them were reading digitally. The journal needed to meet them there.

We updated the logo and redesigned the publication's layouts from the ground up. The cover moved to bold graphic images on black, giving the journal a more distinctive and confident presence on any screen or shelf. Inside, we chose Bio Sans as the primary typeface for headlines and large text. A neutral sans-serif with a subtle geometric quality and a large x-height, it was selected specifically for its readability in both print and digital formats. Color-coded sections replaced undifferentiated layouts, making it easy for busy readers to find what was relevant to their specialty without hunting.

Every visual decision connected back to the same goal: make a journal that busy professionals would actually read. The result was a publication that looked as authoritative as it had always been, and finally felt as modern as the field it covered.

With content that can vary wildly issue-to-issue, organization was key. So we created a flexible grid system to be able to contain a number of text lengths, callouts, tables and images.
